Can anyone explain to me the english translation of the title of Balzac's,'La maison du Chat-qui-pelote'? Apparently it is,'At the Sign of the Cat and the Racket Pelote is a Basque game that involves batting a ball with a kind of curved racket, more like a basket actually.

But I'm not certain that's what is meant here. I would have thought of a pelote de laine, a skein of wool. Anyway, the Maison du Chat qui Something refers to a building with a sign outside, depicting a cat doing something. Aupick Senior Member Strasbourg, France. Although today it only refers to the Basque game, according to Le Petit Robert "pelote" used to refer to the "jeu de paume", a form of indoor tennis "real tennis"?
The verb "peloter" could mean "play real tennis", but could also mean to knock a tennis ball up and back informally, without really playing. They give the title to Balzac's story as a quotation for the last meaning. I can see why they chose the translation they did In the text Balzac explains why the place is called "la Maison du chat-qui-pelote" : inside the house there is a naive painting showing a cat with a big racket seemingly playing a kind of tennis pelote?
